Development of criteria and procedures for the evaluation of the European Action Plan for Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Lampkin, Nicolas; Dabbert, Stephan; Zanoli, Raffaele; Michelsen, Johannes; Gonzalvez, Victor.
This final report provides a synthesis of the results of the EU-funded ORGAP project, with the title “European Action Plan of Organic Food and Farming - Development of criteria and procedures for the evaluation of the EU Action Plan for Organic Agriculture”. This project started in May 2005 and was completed in April 2008. The overall objective of this project was to give scientific support to the implementation of the EU Organic Action Plan (EUOAP) by the development of an evaluation toolbox. In the project 10 partners from 9 countries (CH, UK, DE, IT, DK, SI, CZ, NL, ES) participated, as well as the European umbrella organisation of the Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM EU Regional group), ensuring a broad stakeholder consultation process and...

Distribution of the added value of the organic food chain Organic Eprints
Sanders, Jürn; Zanoli, Raffaele; Gambelli, Danilo; Padel, Susanne; Orsini, Stefano; Stolze, Matthias; Lernoud, Julia; Willer, Helga.
Over the last decade the organic market in the EU has grown faster than the organic agricultural area, which raises the question to what extent organic supply chains function effectively. Therefore, this study investigated the creation and distribution of added value in a number of organic supply chains in different EU countries. The results of the case studies suggest that higher added value is created in organic compared to conventional supply chains. However, no evidence was found that the relative share of organic farmers in the total added value differs substantially from that of conventional farmers. Also in organic food supply chains farmers capture a relative small proportion of added value. This can partly be explained by similarities of organic...

Effect of information about organic production on beef liking and consumer willingness to pay Organic Eprints
Napolitano, Fabio; Braghieri, Ada; piasentier, Edi; Favotto, Saida; Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The present study was aimed to assess the effect of information about organic production on beef liking and consumer willingness to pay. Mean scores of perceived liking were higher for organic beef (OB) as compared to conventional beef (CB). Expected liking scores were higher for OB than for CB. For OB the expected liking was significantly higher than the perceived liking expressed in blind conditions (negative disconfirmation), whereas for CB no difference was observed. Consumers completely assimilated their liking for OB in the direction of expectations. Consumers showed a willingness to pay for OB higher than the suggested price (P < 0.001), the latter corresponding to the local commercial value for organic beef. We conclude that the information...

EU organic logo and its perception by consumers Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Padel, Susanne; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Purpose – With the introduction of the mandatory European Union (EU) organic logo for all organic food products in 2010, the European Commission aimed at fostering the internal organic food market. This needs consumers’ knowledge of the logo. According to earlier research consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo is low. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to elicit consumers’ attitudes towards organic certification and labelling and to develop recommendations on how to improve consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo. Design/methodology/approach – By means of an online survey with 3,000 participants in six European countries, knowledge of the logo and attitudes towards organic farming and European labelling, as well as organic food purchase...

Exploiting Qualitative Information for Decision Support in Scenario Analysis Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Vairo, Daniela; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The development of scenario analysis (SA) to assist decision makers and stakeholders has been growing over the last few years through mainly exploiting qualitative information provided by experts. In this study, we present SA based on the use of qualitative data for strategy planning. We discuss the potential of SA as a decision-support tool, and provide a structured approach for the interpretation of SA data, and an empirical validation of expert evaluations that can help to measure the consistency of the analysis. An application to a specific case study is provided, with reference to the European organic farming business.

Farmer Consumer Partnerships - How to successfully communicate the values of organic food Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Freyer, Bernhard; Gössinger, Katharina; Hametter, Monika; Naspetti, Simona; Padel, Susanne; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.
As the popularity of organic food increases, many organic businesses are facing ever greater competition in the marketplace. And in a world where more and more organic products are mass produced, and where most consumers have little - if any - contact with the organic farmers who have produced their food, many people feel that the underlying principles of the organic movement are coming under increasing threat. Yet research shows that there is growing interest among today's consumers in the wider ethical principles which underpin organic agriculture. They want fairer working conditions; they want to support disadvantaged societal groups, higher standards of animal welfare, and the preservation of tradition and landscapes through their purchasing...

Feasibility of risk-based inspections in organic farming: results from a probabilistic model Organic Eprints
GAMBELLI, DANILO; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
A risk-based inspection system might improve the efficiency of the organic farming certification system and ultimately provide a basis for increased competitiveness of this sector. This requires the definition of an effective inspection procedure that allows statistical evaluation of critical risk factors for noncompliance. In this article, we present a study based on data from selected control bodies in five European countries that is aimed at determining the feasibility of risk-based inspections in the organic sector according to the data that are currently routinely recorded. Bayesian networks are used for identification of the factors that can affect the risk of noncompliance. The results show that previous/concurrent noncompliant behavior explains...

How to understand the complexity of product quality and the challenges in differentiating between organically and conventionally grown products – exemplified by fresh and heat-processed carrots (Daucus carota L.) Organic Eprints
Seljåsen, Randi; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Birlouez, I; Paoletti, F; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Busscher, Nicolaas; Mengheri, Elena; Sinesio, F.; Zanoli, Raffaele; Vairo, Daniela; Beck, Alexander; Kahl, J..
Quality traits are highly focused upon in the marketing of organic food products. There is a need to define and measure quality as consumers seem to have preconceived notions about the superior health value and taste of organic compared to non-organic products. A commonly held opinion among many consumer groups is that organic farming guarantees optimum quality, despite the fact that this remains unproven. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of quality traits in a plant-based food product, using carrots as an example. Selected designated quality aspects are presented to describe the complexity of quality and discuss the challenges of using these aspects in differentiating between organic and conventional...

Innovations in low input and organic dairy supply chains - What is acceptable in Europe? Organic Eprints
Nicholas, Phillipa; Mandolesi, Serena; Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The growth in organic and low-input farming practices is driven by both market demand for high quality, safe food, and European Union policy support, and these types of farming practices are considered in European Union policies for sustainable production, food quality, healthy life, and rural development. However, many constraints to the development of low-input and organic dairy farming supply chains have been identified, including economic, political, and technical constraints. In order for these types of supply chains to develop and provide further benefits to society, innovations are required to improve their sustainability. However, an innovation will only be taken up and result in desirable change if the whole supply chain accepts the innovation. In...

Käuferpräferenzen und Zahlungsbereitschaft für Bio-Plus-Kommunikationsargumente Organic Eprints
Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Consumers increasingly demand products with specific social, ethical and environmental attributes as well as food products with regional identity. We investigated consumer preferences and willingness to pay for selected OrganicPlus arguments referring to such product attributes. The OrganicPlus arguments were communicated on organic egg packages and tested by means of consumer choice experiments in five European countries in a near-buying situation. The data was analysed with multivariate analysis. Our study suggests that consumers prefer organic egg packages displaying OrganicPlus arguments rather than packages without OrganicPlus arguments. Furthermore, consumers on average are willing to pay an additional price premium for some of the OrganicPlus eggs,...

Landwirte-Verbraucher-Partnerschaften – Erfolgreiche Kommunikation von Werten ökologischer Lebensmittel. Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Freyer, Bernhard; Gössinger, Katharina; Hametter, Monika; Naspetti, Simona; Padel, Susanne; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.

Measuring the risk of non-compliance in Italian organic farms with parametric and non parametric models Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Certification is an essential feature for organic products, and is based on controls/inspections to verify compliance with EU Reg. CE 834/07. Implementing a risk based inspection system can contribute to an effective and efficient organic control system, hence improving organic farming relative competitiveness. This study is part of the CERCOST EU project, and analyses data from inspections on a sample of Italian organic farms, aiming at the identification of management and structural risk factors contributing to the occurrence of non-compliances. Risk analysis is based on the estimation of both parametric and non-parametric models using negative binomial panel estimators and Bayesian network modelling.
